Born in the Philippines, Charles Mortel was raised on the Southwest side of Chicago with two great brothers and strict, stern, but always supportive parents. Married since 1994, his biggest source for inspiration and support comes from his wife Teri.
Charlie started taking pictures while enrolled in the Architecture program at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Primarily taking pictures of scale model buildings, he was introduced to shooting slide and B/W film. Providing B/W proof sheets for the IIT newspaper, provided experience in fundamental photojournalism. After pursuing a graphic design career path, he was able to work on product photography projects, furthering his knowledge in photography. The subject matters for his fine art images varies widely. They are usually inanimate objects photographed in their natural state, using ambient lighting from the sun, candle light, room lighting or street lighting. With the acquisition of the studio space at 5000 W. Roosevelt Ave., Charlie is now able to shoot products as well as fashion, in a more controlled environment. Product displays can be developed and adjusted to make just the right layout for the client's use. Fashion and model shoots can be taken in a private, comfortable atmosphere, allowing the models to show their true emotions in front of the camera. On photo shoots, Charlie uses a Nikon D100 with several prime lenses, along with a zoom lens, for event photo sessions. Once the images are taken, they are then downloaded to the laptop through Nikon View 6. Adjustments are made in Nikon Capture 4 Editor and Photoshop. Once the photographs are just right, final output is made through a calibrated Canon i9100 printer, sent out to be printed through service bureaus, or sent as digital files to the client. Throughout the entire process, great attention is made in capturing just the right moment, in just the right lighting, producing just the right image. Charles Mortel |
