Walking around Sophie's Restaurant one early afternoon, I noticed the brightly colored red bricks in the back of the building. The sun was high, casting hard shadows and providing lots of contrast. Not the most ideal lighting conditions for taking a picture. The harsh shadows and the hard sun light was a perfect combination to lend contrast and impact to this image though. Had the lighting been softer and more diffused, the sheen off of the bricks wouldn't have shown at all, and the stair case shadows would not have lent such a good element of repetition in this composition.

Normally photographers like to shoot in soft diffused lighting. Shooting outside the hours between 10:00a.m and 2:00p.m. helps keep that harsh sun light out of your pictures. This picture was taken around 1:00p.m.. Knowing when to break those general guidelines in photography and not being afraid to experiment, helped me to create this piece.
